Absence of data is also data

There is so much talk about data, data analysis, business analytics, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and deep-fake doing the rounds nowadays, that I thought of cutting through the noise so that we all can listen to the song. Right now, we are in an information derailment, information blackout and information overload era. These man-made disasters have heightened information asymmetry, instead of taking us to the information highway. Social-media universities are calling all the shots. We need to cut the noise to listen to the songs.

Basics - There is nothing new. Data was always important and it will continue to be important throughout human civilization. AI is at least 10 years down the line. Today what we are doing is not AI. It's feeding the machine with visual data to improve ML. In layman's terms - R or Python is nothing but C-compiled. Block chain technology is nothing but application of distributed ledger systems.

Physics is, simply put, the study of nature. And if that is the case, then there can hardly be boundaries in “nature”. There cannot be an undergraduate-level of nature, or, for that matter, a postgraduate-level of nature. Nature could be studied at any level. What is true for physics is true for all subjects. Absence of data is also data, equally important if not more. Few examples may illustrate the argument better

  1. Do they teach us the importance of communication and language as economic parameters? No, but is it possible to do any transaction without communicating?

  1. Do they teach us geography in a history class? No, but is it possible to learn about the Ottoman empire without understanding the geographical importance of Turkey?

  1. Do they teach us the importance of neural networks in biology class? No, but is it possible to understand how the brain functions without understanding neural networks?

To be better at data interpretation we need to take 2 simple steps - 1) reading Novels, and 2) traveling to places to understand culture and society. With understanding comes enjoyment. We need to read substance in both fiction and nonfiction. Managers only read 5 ways of improving self. Leaders also spend time reading Tagore or the likes. Decide what you want to be? Manager or leader? Life always gives us choices. Decide and pick yours. Along with reading we also need to travel as frequently as possible. It's a life skill. Traveling to a village is as important as spending time in Singapore. Converse with local people, eat local cuisine, and walk across the road to understand humanity. Life is not only about finding problems. There were / are / will be plenty. Think of solutions. World was there before. It will be after us. Ask the right questions to bridge the gap between the past and the future. This is present. Instead of vegetating. It's time for us to start living. Our life! Our future!
